Obama wants the U.S. to build the world’s first exascale computer

The Obama administration is preparing for life after Moore’s Law, and has officially set a government-wide goal of creating an exascale computing system that would have about 100 times the performance of current 10 petaflop systems.

No country has yet created an exascale computer, which would mark at least a 30-fold increase in computing power from today’s fastest machines.

The White House quietly issued the executive order on supercomputing Wednesday, creating a government-wide program that would seek to better align various government agencies toward achieving key benchmarks in computing power.
